How to keep a crochet plushie soft for years

A few gentle habits keep cotton yarn soft, colours bright and stitches tight, even after years of hugs.

· 1 min read

Every akira plushie is crocheted by hand in cotton yarn, so it likes a little care in return.

Spot clean first

For small marks, dab with a damp cloth and a drop of mild soap. Rub gently in the direction of the stitches, then pat dry with a towel.

Washing by hand

When a plushie needs a proper bath:

  1. Fill a basin with cool water and a little gentle detergent.
  2. Squeeze the plushie softly under the water. Don't twist or wring it.
  3. Rinse in clean cool water until the soap is gone.
  4. Press out the water inside a folded towel.

Drying

Lay it flat on a dry towel in the shade and reshape the ears and limbs while it's damp. Skip the tumble dryer and direct sun, which can shrink cotton and fade colours.
